Mount Kilimanjaro

Geführtes Trekking auf der Umbwe-Route des Kilimandscharo

The Umbwe Route is known as the steepest and most challenging route on Kilimanjaro, perfect for climbers seeking adventure and a direct path to the summit. Unlike other routes, Umbwe begins with a steep climb through dense rainforest, providing an intense but rewarding start. Trekkers are rewarded with dramatic vistas, lush forests, and pristine wilderness throughout the journey.

This route is fully tented, offering comfort in the heart of nature. The Umbwe Route is ideal for experienced trekkers with good fitness levels, as it has a rapid ascent and requires sustained effort. The 6-day itinerary allows extra time for acclimatization, improving summit success, while the 5-day itinerary is faster-paced but still provides a highly rewarding summit experience.

Trekking the Umbwe Route takes you through rainforest, heath and moorland zones, alpine desert, and finally to the summit, offering unparalleled views of Kibo and Mawenzi Peaks. The summit day delivers the breathtaking sunrise from Uhuru Peak (5,895 m), an unforgettable experience and the pinnacle of your Kilimanjaro adventure.

  • Day 1: Umbwe Gate → Umbwe Cave Camp (2,900 m)

The trek begins at Umbwe Gate, with registration and introduction to your armed park ranger. From the gate, the trail ascends rapidly through dense rainforest, alive with exotic birds, colobus monkeys, and vibrant flora. Waterfalls, moss-covered trees, and shaded trails make this initial climb both scenic and physically demanding.

After 4–5 hours of trekking, arrive at Umbwe Cave Camp, a fully tented campsite nestled in the forest. Here, you can relax, enjoy a hot meal, and soak in the lush surroundings. This camp marks the start of an intense but rewarding Kilimanjaro experience.

  • Day 2: Umbwe Cave Camp → Barranco Camp (3,950 m)

Today’s trek continues steeply upward, leaving the rainforest behind and entering the heath and moorland zones. Dramatic vistas of Kibo and Mawenzi Peaks begin to dominate the horizon. The trail traverses volcanic ridges, offering an early taste of the alpine desert terrain.

Arrive at Barranco Camp, located at the base of the famous Barranco Wall. This high-altitude tented campsite provides a chance to rest and acclimatize. Afternoon optional walks help with acclimatization and photography. Dinner is served in camp under the crisp mountain air, preparing climbers for the exciting scramble tomorrow.

  • Day 3: Barranco Camp → Karanga Camp (4,035 m)

This morning begins with the Barranco Wall climb, a steep but manageable rock scramble offering panoramic views of Kibo, Mawenzi, and the surrounding valleys. It is one of the most scenic and exhilarating parts of the Umbwe Route.

After descending into Karanga Valley, you reach Karanga Camp, a fully tented site. This segment is crucial for acclimatization and energy conservation before the summit push. Optional short walks allow exploration of the valley while absorbing the dramatic mountain landscapes. Dinner and rest prepare trekkers for the alpine desert stage.

  • Day 4: Karanga Camp → Barafu Camp (4,640 m)

The trek continues steadily through the alpine desert, with barren landscapes providing a sense of isolation and grandeur. The path leads to Barafu Camp, your final campsite before summit day. The imposing Kibo Peak looms above, and the sparse vegetation emphasizes the remote beauty of Kilimanjaro’s high slopes.

Upon arrival, climbers rest, hydrate, and have an early meal. Your guides conduct a summit briefing, explaining timing, pacing, and safety protocols. Early sleep is crucial for the midnight ascent to Uhuru Peak.

  • Day 5: Barafu Camp → Uhuru Peak (5,895 m) → Mweka Camp (3,100 m)

Summit day begins around midnight. Trekkers ascend steep scree slopes and rocky alpine terrain, guided by headlamps. After 5–7 hours of climbing, reach Gillman’s Point (5,685 m), followed by the final stretch to Uhuru Peak, where the sunrise over Africa’s highest point is breathtaking.

After photos and celebration, descend carefully to Barafu Camp for a short rest and snack, then continue to Mweka Camp, a tented campsite in the rainforest. Enjoy a hot meal and well-deserved rest after the summit day’s exertion.
